Application for Certificate of Eligibility
This is an application that foreign nationals who wish to enter Japan must submit before entering the country to prove that they meet the conditions for landing, such as that the activities they intend to engage in in Japan fall under one of the residence statuses (excluding “Temporary Visitor” and “Permanent Resident”).
Application for permission to change residence status
This is an application to change a foreign national residing in Japan with a certain status of residence to a new status of residence when they wish to change the purpose of their stay and engage in activities that fall under a different status of residence.
Application for permission to extend period of stay
This is an application to extend the period of stay that a foreign national residing in Japan with any status of residence wishes to continue residing beyond the granted period of stay without changing their current status of residence.
Application for permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted
This application is made by foreign nationals residing in Japan with a status of residence such as work or study abroad who wish to engage in activities other than those permitted by their status of residence, such as part-time work, that involve operating a business that generates income or activities that receive remuneration.
Re-entry permit application
A re-entry permit is a permit granted by the Minister of Justice prior to departure to simplify entry and landing procedures when a foreign national residing in Japan intends to temporarily leave and re-enter the country. There are two types of re-entry permits.
Application for Certificate of Authorized Employment
This is an application for foreign national to receive a document certifying that they are engaged in activities that generate income or receive remuneration and that can be carried out under their status of residence.
Status of Residence
Status of residence is described in the upper column of Appendix 1 of the Immigration Control Act. Examples are below.
Business Manager
- Activities to operate trade or other businesses in Japan or to engage in the management of such businesses.
- Examples of such people include company managers and administrators.


Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
- Activities to engage in work that requires skills or knowledge in the fields of science, engineering, or other natural sciences, or in the fields of jurisprudence, economics, sociology, or other humanities, or work that requires thinking or sensibilities based on a foreign culture, conducted based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan.
- Examples of such positions include mechanical engineers, interpreters, designers, language teachers in private companies, and marketing professionals.
Skilled Worker
- Activities to engage in work that requires skilled techniques in a specific industrial field, based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan.
- Examples of such workers include chefs of foreign cuisine, sports instructors, aircraft pilots, and craftsmen who process precious metals.

Highly Skilled Professional No.1&No.2
- The “Highly Skilled Professional No.1” status of residence was established as a status of residence with relaxed activity restrictions compared to other general work statuses in order to further promote the acceptance of foreign nationals with highly specialized skills who are expected to contribute to academic research and economic development in Japan.
- The “Highly Skilled Professional No.2” status of residence was established in order to further promote the acceptance of foreign nationals with highly specialized skills who are expected to contribute to academic research and economic development in Japan. This status of residence is for those who have stayed in Japan for a certain period of time with the “Highly Skilled Professional No.1” status of residence, and has an indefinite period of stay and significantly relaxed activity restrictions.
