What is Residence Status?

In general, we have a tendency to consider residence status as VISA. However, technically, Residence Status is not VISA.

While VISA is provided to foreign nationals who intend to entry into Japan by the embassy of Japan in each country, Residence Status is furnished by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan according to the activity trying to conduct in Japan. Hence, acquisition of “visa” and “Status of Residence” are separate procedures that fall under the jurisdiction of different organizations.

Residence Status applications have to be submitted to the authority in accordance with immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act of Japan, and it is complicated and sometimes physically impossible for foreign nations to complete the procedure by themselves. Therefore, Administrative scriveners are authorized agents who support for Residence Status applications on behalf of foreign nations pursuant to mandate contract.
